I'm Riding For
Jimmy
Jimmy was diagnosed with brain cancer in March 2006. Over the next nearly four years, he endured 15 brain surgeries, chemotherapy, and two rounds of six-week radiation treatments before he died on December 27, 2009, just two days after Christmas. His mother described him as “such a gentle soul,” someone who never asked why he was sick or questioned the cross he was given to carry. And somehow, through it all, gave the biggest hugs. What stayed with me was that, even while describing such a difficult journey, she also talked about the many blessings their family encountered along the way. That is why I ride. Jimmy should have been deciding what to study in college, spending time with friends, enjoying holidays with his family, dating, and planning the life ahead of him. Instead, he and his family were facing surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and a battle no young person should have to fight. I am riding in Jimmy's memory, for his family, and for every young person whose future has been interrupted by cancer. I ride because their stories matter, and because no family should have to face this fight alone.
My Story
Wow. Seven years!
It’s hard to believe I’ve been doing the GCC for seven years.
What started as a way to stay active, get some use out of a bike I probably spent too much on, and escape a case of cabin fever has become something that means so much more to me. At first, I wanted to get out into the world in a safe way and figured if I was going to ride, I might as well do some good along the way.
Over the years, this challenge has taught me a lot about myself, about perseverance, pushing through difficult things, and continuing to show up. It has become important to me not just because of the riding, but because of what it has taught me. This year has brought some setbacks, and I know it’s going to be a challenging one. But that makes this year’s ride even more meaningful.
Cancer has affected so many people in my life. I lost both grandfathers to cancer, including one I never had the chance to meet. Other relatives and friends have also been affected.
It breaks my heart that children have to fight cancer when they should be growing up, playing, dreaming, and looking forward to their futures.
Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.
This September, I’m once again taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids’ cancer!
More than 15,700 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and sadly, 38 children die from cancer every week.
My challenge may be difficult this year, but what I face on the bike is nothing compared to what these kids and their families are going through. What matters most is raising money to help give these children a better chance at the futures they deserve.
I’m raising funds to support Children’s Cancer Research Fund and their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.
Please consider making a donation. Every contribution helps.
Seven years of riding. Seven years of learning. Seven years of hoping. And hopefully, one day, a cure.
Thank you for supporting me and these kids. ❤️🚴♂️

Another Great Cycle Challenge Comes to an End - 2026
31 Oct 2026Today marks the final day of this year's Great Cycle Challenge, and I have some mixed feelings as I wrap up another year.
This year didn't go quite as I had hoped. Between working more, dealing with weather that seemed to alternate between excessive heat and never-ending rain, and simply not being in the same shape I was in years past, finding the time and energy to ride was more challenging. I also wish I had been able to spend more time keeping everyone updated and sharing the journey along the way.
But this year was especially meaningful for a very personal reason. For the first time, I rode in memory of Jimmy, the son of my cousin and his wife.
Although I knew bits and pieces of their journey, I had no idea just how much Jimmy and their entire family had been through, or how long that journey lasted during his illness. Before the challenge, his parents were kind enough to share more of their story with me, giving me a much deeper understanding of Jimmy, his life, and the person he was.
I wanted to do more than simply dedicate my miles to his memory. I wanted to share his story and help honor the person he truly was. Having his parents open up and trust me with something so personal was a privilege, and one I am grateful for.
Learning more about what Jimmy and his family went through also brought home just how important this cause is. It's why we need to continue raising money for cancer research and bringing awareness to as many people as we can. Hopefully, through continued research and awareness, we can help prevent other children and families from having to experience this kind of heartache.
This is my seventh year participating in the Great Cycle Challenge, and while every year has had its own challenges and rewards, this one has given me an even deeper appreciation for why I keep coming back.
I especially want to thank those of you who have supported me year after year. Some of you have been following this journey since the very beginning, and seeing your names come up year after year means more to me than you know. Your generosity, encouragement, and continued support never go unnoticed, and I never take any of it for granted. I'm also grateful to everyone who has joined me along the way. It means a lot to have you all in my corner, and I'm thankful for each and every one of you!
My riding season may not have gone exactly as planned, but I'm finishing this challenge with a renewed appreciation for its purpose and a very special person in my thoughts.
Thank you for being part of this journey. ❤️Jimmy
